Sandwiches
The bread-enclosed convenience food known as the "sandwich" is attributed to John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a British statesman and notorious profligate and gambler, who is said to be the inventor of this type of food so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper. In 1762, it is said that he ordered his valet to bring him roast beef tucked between two pieces of bread so that he could eat with his hands. Soon after, others began to order "the same as Sandwich".
In the 1900’s, the sandwich became very popular in the North American diet when bakeries started selling presliced bread, thus making sandwiches quick to create. Sandwiches became an easy, portable meal for workers and school children alike.
Whether its a burger, grilled cheese, tea sandwich or sandwich, these little finger food gems are appealing to everyone.
