Fish and Chips (Air Fryer)

airfryer-fishchipsFish and chips is a classic dinner for a reason. This easy recipe gives you golden, crispy fillets with less oil, fat, calories and guilt.

16 oz frozen French fries or your favourite homemade air fryer fries
1 lb fish fillets; haddock, cod, pollock, flounder or other white fish
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 egg
½ cup all-purpose flour, unbleached
2 tsp. ground paprika
½ tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. sea salt
¼ tsp. black pepper, freshly ground

Make the French fries first. Use the air fryer to heat frozen French fries at 400°F (200°C/180°C fan, Gas Mark 6) for 15 minutes, shaking once. Or make homemade air fryer fries.

While the fries cook preheat the oven to 250°F (120°C/100°C fan, Gas Mark 0.5) and prepare the rest of the ingredients.

Get three bowls for breading. In one bowl put the breadcrumbs. In the second bowl put the egg and stir it to mix it. In the third bowl add the flour along with the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Stir to mix.

Cut the fish fillet into serving size pieces. You can also cut it into fish stick pieces if you prefer.

Pat the fish dry with a paper towel. Then dip it into the bowl with the flour mixture.

Shake off any excess flour and dip in egg mixture, coating it thoroughly.

Finally dip it into the breadcrumbs and coat it completely in breadcrumbs.

Set the piece aside to rest and repeat with the remaining pieces.

Once the fries are done cooking place them on a tray and put them in the 250°F (120°C/100°C fan, Gas Mark 0.5). This will keep them warm.

Use a mister spray bottle to spray the breadcrumb covered pieces with a little bit of oil. If you don't have a spray bottle brush some oil on with a pastry brush.

Place the coated fillets in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 400°F (200°C/180°C fan, Gas Mark 6) for 10 minutes.

After 6 minutes open the air fryer and carefully flip each piece over. Continue to cook until it flakes easily with a fork or reaches a temperature of 145°F. Total cooking time will be around 10-12 minutes.

Serve with the French fries along with lemon and tartar sauce.


Cook's Notes:

  • If using frozen fish fillets thaw them first. The breading will not stick well to frozen fillets.
  • If you skip making fries in the air fryer preheat it for 3 minutes at 400°F (200°C) before cooking the fish.
