Bacon Bangles with Maple Cracked Pepper Dipping Sauce
These sausage-stuffed onion rings are wrapped in smoky bacon and paired with an irresistible Maple Cracked Pepper Dipping Sauce. Loaded with sausage and wrapped in bacon, these ultimate onion rings are the perfect appetizer. And don’t forget the homemade Maple Cracked Pepper Dipping Sauce - the combination really makes the dish.
Bacon Bangles:
3-4 large yellow onions
1 lb breakfast sausage
1.8 lbs (24 oz) bacon
Maple Cracked Pepper Dipping Sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise
¼ cup pure maple syrup
1 Tbsp. black pepper, freshly cracked
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C/160°C fan, Gas Mark 4). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
For the Bacon Bangles:
Take the 3-4 large yellow onions and cut them into ½-¾" thick slices.
Separate the rings and lay them out so that there is a gap between the two layers of rings about ¼".
Using about 2 Tbsp. of the 1 lb breakfast sausage, stuff it in between the onion ring gaps.
Take 2-3 pieces of thin cut bacon and wrap them around the sausage stuffed onion rings. Note: Thick bacon doesn't do as well for wrapping.
Place the bacon bangles on the baking sheet with at least a 1" space around the bangles. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the bacon has crisped up.
Make the Maple Cracked Pepper Dipping Sauce:
Make the dipping sauce by combining the mayonnaise, maple syrup and cracked pepper. Stir until smooth. Either drizzle the sauce onto the bangles or serve as a dipping sauce.
Makes 12 bangles.
Cook's Notes:
- These meaty onion rings are the perfect appetizer but even better in a burger. Instead of adding an onion ring and bacon to your burger, add a Bacon Bangle.
- Another fun way to serve these onion rings: stack them on top of each other for a pretty display. You can stack vertically making one big, restaurant-style onion tower, or simply layer them on top of each other on a plate or serving platter.
- You can also drizzle our homemade sauce on top, or pair with a few dipping sauce cups.
Storage and Reheating:
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (180°C/160°C fan, Gas Mark 4) until heated through and crispy, about 4-5 minutes.
- Reheat in the oven at 375°F (190°C/170°C fan, Gas Mark 5) until heated through and crispy, about 10-12 minutes.
