Woo Woo (New York)

american-newyork-woowooA Woo Woo is an alcoholic beverage made of vodka, peach schnapps, and cranberry juice. It is typically served as a cocktail in a highball glass or can be served as a shot. It is also sometimes served in a rocks glass. The ingredients are usually shaken together with ice or stirred as preferred.

Although Woo Woo is a popular cocktail, its origins are still somewhat murky, but many believe that it was invented in a (now closed) First Edition bar in Bayside, New York. Allegedly, every time the Mets would score, the bartender shouted "woo woo" and gave a round of these cocktails to the patrons.

1 oz vodka (30 mL)
1 oz peach schnapps (30 mL)
2 oz cranberry juice (60 mL)

Garnish:
lime wedge

Shake the ingredients in a shaker with ice.

Strain into a highball glass filled with ice.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Cook's Notes:

  • VARIATIONS: Most woo woo recipes call for the same three ingredients, but they differ in their proportions. Woo woo can be served both as a drink and as a shot, but for party occasions, it can be made as a punch. If served as a drink it is served on the rocks, but when served as a shot, there will be no ice in it.
  • METHOD: Most recipes instruct that the drink be shaken, but it can be mixed as well.
  • DRINKWARE: Nowadays, a woo woo will typically be served in a highball glass, but serving it in a rocks glass is also common. A cocktail glass or a coupe glass will work as well. If served as a shot, use a shot glass.
  • GARNISH: A woo woo usually does not have any garnish, but some recipes will call for a lime wedge or a lime wheel to be used as a decoration.
