Mint Julep

mintjulepAnyone who is into horse racing will be familiar with the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby during which some 80,000 juleps are served. Traditionally Mint Juleps are served in silver or pewter cups and held by the handle or rim in order for the cup to obtain optimum frost. As an alternative to muddling the mint and sugar cube you can also infuse a sugar syrup with mint. With this much bourbon in a drink, slow sipping is the appropriate way to imbibe.

7-10 fresh mint leaves
2 sugar cubes
1½ oz bourbon whiskey (75 mL)

Garnish:
1 sprig mint

Muddle mint and two sugar cubes in a silver mint julep cup.

Add the crushed ice, and pour in the bourbon, then stir.

Top with more crushed ice, so it looks like a cone at the top.

Smack the mint sprig with the palm of your hand to release the flavors, then garnish the cocktail.

If adding a straw, place it next to the mint, so you can smell the mint each time you go for a sip.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Cook's Notes:

  • VARIATIONS: The most common variation is the use of sugar syrup in place of sugar or sugar cubes, as that gives the drink a more balanced sweetness.
  • DRINKWARE: Although the silver mint julep cup is the traditional choice, a highball glass, or a double old-fashioned glass are also an option for this cocktail.
