Sangaree (Lemon Blackberry)
This cocktail has been around since 1774, and as you may be suspecting, yes, it was a precursor to the sangria. I have substituted water for club soda, because why not? We are living in the 21st century. Also, the addition of blackberries? Same.
4 oz Madeira Rainwater
2 tsp. granulated sugar
½ oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1 pinch nutmeg, freshly grated
¼ cup blackberries
1 slice lemon
4 oz club soda
Garnish:
blackberries
lemon slices
In a small pitcher combine Madeira Rainwater, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and grated nutmeg. Stir well until sugar has dissolved.
Add blackberries and lemon slices to pitcher.
Refrigerate for at least two hours. Strain sangaree, add club soda and stir.
Serve in chilled coupe glasses.
Garnish with blackberries and a slice of lemon.
