Dry Rub (South African Braai Salt)

southafrican-braaisaltBraai literally means barbecue in the Afrikaans language. This spice blend is delicious when used as a rub or marinade. Braai is one of the culinary traditions that all of South Africa's ethnicities have in common. Braai salt is a dry rub that can include ingredients such as mustard, coriander, and cumin. These spices may be used to cook meats ranging from beef and lamb to more exotic proteins like ostrich and kudu. The ingredients can vary so there is no singles flavour profile but the typical braai salt will be savoury and highly aromatic. In some cases, it will be spicy as well, depending on the amount of cayenne used.

1 Tbsp. dry mustard
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 Tbsp. sea salt
1 Tbsp. black pepper, freshly ground
pinch cayenne pepper

Combine all spices into an air-tight jar. Store in a cool dry place.
