Quatre-Épices Sweet Mix (French Four Spice)
Quatre épices recipe, or four spices, is traditionally pepper-based and used to season nearly everything in the French kitchen. This sweet version, sometimes dismissed as unnecessary by traditionalists, uses allspice as a substitute for pepper. The warm flavour of this spice blend makes it a fantastic match for desserts and spice breads.
1 Tbsp. ground allspice
1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
1 Tbsp. ground nutmeg
1 Tbsp. ground cloves
Stir the spices together and store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Makes 4 Tbsp. or ¼ cup of spice mixture.
