Ham and Pea Soup (Protein)

peahamsoupproteinThis Ham and Pea Soup is a creamy and hearty classic that we all know and love, but the regular recipe is carb-rich and low in protein (not exactly good for our macros). This adaptation is more nutritious but just as delicious.

2 onions, chopped
2 carrots, diced
1 chicken or vegetable stock cube
3½ cups water, hot
11 oz split peas (300 g)
1 tsp. garlic powder or 1 crushed garlic clove
11 oz frozen peas (300 g)
18 oz ham hock (500 g)
½ cup (2 scoops) unflavoured whey protein powder (39 g)
sea salt
black pepper, freshly ground

Garnish:
chopped green onions
cooked diced bacon
croutons
crusty bread

In a large pot, sauté onions till softened. Add diced carrot and cook for another 2 minutes.

Dissolve stock cube in ½ cup of water and add to the pot. Also add the remaining water, split peas and garlic.

Cook for 45 minutes on a low heat or until your split peas are well softened.

Add frozen peas and cook for another 15 minutes. With a immersion blender place into the soup and blend until smooth, or if you like chunky you can leave as is. Add the ham hock and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

Add protein powder and stir through until well combined.

Season with salt and pepper, then serve.

Makes 6 servings.
