Onion Fritters (Amish)
Nestled in the heart of Amish country, where rich traditions intersect with culinary mastery, lies a delightful creation known as Amish Onion Fritters. These delectable golden-brown treats offer a tantalizing twist to the classic fritters we all adore. Infused with irresistible flavours and steeped in Amish heritage, these fritters make for the perfect snack on lazy afternoons or an appetizer that will impress at any gathering. These delights are best served hot and crispy. You can enjoy them on their own, but they also pair wonderfully with a dipping sauce or condiment of your choice. Some Amish families prefer to accompany these fritters with a dollop of homemade applesauce for a delightful contrast of flavours.
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 cup all-purpose flour, unbleached
1 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. sea salt
¼ tsp. black pepper, freshly ground
½ cup milk
1 large egg
vegetable oil, for frying
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
Incorporate the milk and egg into the dry ingredients, mixing until a smooth batter forms.
Then, gently fold in the thinly sliced onions to ensure an even coating with the batter.
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat.
The batter made with onions should be dropped into the hot oil using spoonfuls. Fry them in batches until they become golden brown and crispy.
Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Serve immediately.
Makes 4 servings.
