dutch-macaronimethamenkaasA Dutch traditional and unique version of mac and cheese.

1 lb elbow macaroni (500 g)
1 cup ham, cooked and diced (250 g)
3-3½ cups Gouda or Edam cheese, grated (350-400 g)
2 large white onions, diced
3-6 cloves garlic, chopped
breadcrumbs (panko works well)

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C, Gas Mark 6). Grease a 13x9" baking dish with butter.

Boil the macaroni in heavily salted water until al dente.

In a large bowl, add the ham, onion, garlic and a large handful of cheese, mix thoroughly.

After draining the macaroni, add to the large bowl and mix thoroughly. Put the mixture in a large, oven-proof dish, and sprinkle the rest of the cheese evenly over the top.

Take a small handful of breadcrumbs and distribute evenly. If it is not enough, take some more, just make sure all of the food is dusted.

Put in the oven until the top is brown and crispy, about 15 minutes.

Serve hot.

Makes 4 servings.
